Benign Kingdom is doing an interview series promoting their art books! Here’s mine!

This is the second in our creator interview series!
Becky Dreistadt is an artist who mostly draws cats. She is know for her webcomic Tiny Kitten Teeth, Tigerbuttah as well as her 151 painting series Capture Creatures, all of which she worked on with her partner Frank. She currently paints lots of covers and back up stories for Boom! Studios  and is a character designer on the animated series Bee and Puppycat. She has an art book that was part of the first season of Benign Kingdom.
B9: What are you working on these days? Any new releases/releases coming up?
BD: I’m working on a few different things right now and about to start one million projects. I’m a character designer on Bee and Puppycat, I’ve been making some limited edition prints and working on more designs for those. I’m doing a bunch of comic covers for Boom and also working on book pitches for some kids books. I also have a secret book coming later this year!

B9: What’s your favorite piece in your B9 book? Any particular reason?

BD: I like the cover the best. I don’t get to draw people much and especially any tough looking people. So it was really refreshing to get to draw that sort of thing. Also I really like folk art and got to incorporate that.

B9: What medium do you work in and why?

BD: I mostly work with Pebeo T7 gouache. I’ve tried other paints and I guess for the style of painting I do, which is pretty much paint by numbers, gouache is the best kind of paint for that.
Recently got back into Copic markers. My friend Madeline Flores had them at a VanCAF and I forgot how fun they are to use. It’s really satisfying finishing a colored image that fast. I’m used to paint, which takes forever.
And lastly I just started getting into Photoshop. I used to make digital art in high school with a Wacom Tablet and The Gimp. I hadn’t made a digital piece in ten years at least. It’s really fun to make little drawings with textured brushes. I’ve also done a little inking in Manga studio, but I still prefer physical inking.

B9: What made you take to art as a career?

BD: I’ve been drawing my entire life and for as long as I can remember that’s what I wanted to do. There’s never been anything else I wanted to do, besides be a fox when I was three.
B9: Tell us about someone else you think is making cool work right now, maybe someone most people wouldn’t know about?
BD: There are so many amazing artists, here are some of my favorites.

B9: Tell us about the piece you’re showing us!

I was inspired by this anime called Little Memole (everyone should watch the intro on Youtube). Also Tony Wolf who made a series of books I think in the 80s/90s about gnomes and forest critters.

The Amazing World of Gumball #1 from Boom! is out in stores today! I’m super glad to be writing my first monthly book, doubly glad to be working with the fantastic Tyson Hesse and triply glad to be working with source material that I love.

Thanks to Boom!, Cartoon Network and Tyson for giving me a shot at this. Pop on down to your local comic book proprietor (or come see both Tyson and I at Earth 2 Comics in Sherman Oaks this Saturday, June 28th from 11am-1pm) and grab a copy!

benignkingdom:

Finished or almost-finished pencils for the screenprinted poster set by Becky and I!

Working big and detailed tightened up some bits from the preliminary drafts: Becky’s monster’s arrow-horns are now antlers, and the heads are more wolf-like and less abstract. I love it! I got kind of carried away with the feathers and floral details, but it’s looking appropriately weird I think. I penciled this thing at Carmine Street Comics recently; here’s a process post.

We’re talking to printers and working out a gameplan to get these things made. Got a good bit of drawing left to do, though. Inks next!
